WIX SEO

What should your Wix store do about AI search?

Keep doing ordinary SEO. Google says its AI search needs no special files or markup. A page must be indexed and able to show with a snippet. Wix’s AI tools are optional, and Wix says NLWeb can’t currently be disconnected once installed.

1. What Google says about AI search

Google has a guide to its AI answers in Search, such as AI Overviews and AI Mode. Google last updated it on July 10, 2026. Its main point: for Google, doing well in AI search is still SEO.

To appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must be indexed. It must also be able to show in Google Search with a snippet. A snippet is the short text under a result’s title. Google says there are no extra technical requirements.

The guide adds one condition. Your site must be included in a Search Console setting called Search generative AI. Every site starts as included. Section 5 explains the setting.

Don’t expect an AI answer on every search. Google says AI Overviews often don’t appear. They show only when Google judges that they add something to the normal results.

2. What you can skip

Google’s guide lists AI tasks you can ignore for Google Search.

An llms.txt file is a text file meant to describe a site to AI tools. Google says you don’t need one to appear in Google Search or its AI features. The same goes for any other special AI file. Google Search ignores these files, so they neither help nor harm you there. Google adds that keeping one for other services is fine.

Markup, also called structured data, is code that labels facts on a page, such as a price. Google says AI search doesn’t require it, and no special schema is needed. Markup can still help a page qualify for rich results, which show extra details.

Google also says there is no need to split pages into tiny pieces or write in a special way for AI. Its AI runs extra related searches behind the scenes. Making a page for each one, mainly to sway rankings or AI answers, breaks its spam policy on scaled content abuse.

GEO, short for generative engine optimization, means work aimed at AI answers. Google says no outside tool has access to its ranking or AI systems. So a paid GEO tool’s score is that tool’s own measure, not Google’s.

3. What to do instead

Google’s guide names three areas. Write content worth reading. Keep a clear technical setup. Keep your business and product details complete.

Of all its tips, Google says unique, non-commodity content will likely matter most over time. Non-commodity means not the same as what every other site has. A description copied from the maker may appear on many other sites. Your own descriptions and answers to real shopper questions won’t.

The technical part is ordinary SEO. A crawler is a program that reads web pages for a search engine or an AI company. Google’s crawler must be able to reach and read your pages. Fewer duplicate pages and a good page experience help too.

For products, Google names Merchant Center feeds and Google Business Profiles. Merchant Center is Google’s service for product listings. Google says these can help your products show in AI answers and in other Google results.

4. What Wix’s AI tools do

Wix’s AI tools in the SEO & GEO section
Wix toolWhat it doesKnow this first
Gen AI VisibilityShows how ChatGPT, Gemini and Perplexity mention your siteNeeds Premium. Wix writes the questions, and you can edit them.
llms.txtA text file about your site for AI toolsGoogle Search ignores it.
NLWebLets AI tools search your site’s contentWix says it can’t currently be disconnected once installed.
Robots.txt EditorEdits the rules crawlers readSome crawlers may ignore the rules.

Wix puts these in the SEO & GEO section of your dashboard. They are optional extras. Google doesn’t require any of them.

Gen AI Visibility needs a Premium plan. Wix’s help calls it the AI Visibility Overview. It asks AI tools questions that Wix writes and you can edit, not questions real shoppers asked. Your site also needs at least 50 unique visitors in the last 30 days. To improve the results, Wix’s own help suggests working on your SEO.

You’ll find llms.txt under Tools and settings. You can view the file, edit it, or switch it off with the “Use your llms.txt file” toggle. Once you edit it, Wix stops updating it automatically until you choose Reset to Default. Wix’s help says it needs an upgraded site, a connected domain and search engine indexing on. Other Wix pages describe who gets it differently, so check your own dashboard.

Think hardest about NLWeb. It also needs an upgraded site and a connected domain. Wix says it doesn’t change how Google, Bing or other search engines crawl or rank your site. Wix also says you can’t currently disconnect a site from NLWeb after installing it. You can still switch off its ASK protocol, which stops AI agent queries. Treat installing it as hard to undo.

5. Choose what AI features may use

Where each AI control lives and what it covers
ControlWhereWhat it covers
Search generative AISearch ConsoleAI Overviews, AI Mode and AI in Discover
nosnippetWix robots meta tagOne page’s snippet and direct AI input
Googlebotrobots.txtAll of Google Search, not just AI
OAI-SearchBotrobots.txtChatGPT search answers
GPTBotrobots.txtTraining OpenAI’s models
ChatGPT-Userrobots.txtUser-asked visits; may skip robots.txt

Most stores can leave all of these at their defaults. Change one only when you know what you want to keep out.

Google’s main switch is in Search Console: Settings, then Search generative AI. Included is the default. If you exclude your site, Google says you’ll get no traffic or impressions (times your link was shown) from those features. Similar content from other sites can still appear there. Changes take a few days, sometimes longer. Google says the setting is not a ranking signal. It also doesn’t cover AI training. For that, Google points to a separate control called Google-Extended.

For one page, tick nosnippet in its robots meta tag. That tag holds the page’s own instructions for search engines. Google says nosnippet keeps the content from being a direct input for AI Overviews and AI Mode. It also removes that page’s text snippet and video preview from all Google results. In the Wix Editor, go to Pages & Menu → More Actions → SEO basics → Advanced SEO → Robots meta tag. In Wix Studio, the path starts at Pages instead. Then publish your site. For a product, go to Products → the product → Edit SEO Settings → Advanced → Robots Meta Tag, then click Save. Wix may move these screens.

Your robots.txt file holds rules that crawlers read before they visit. OpenAI uses separate names for search, training and user visits. It says its search and training settings are independent. So blocking GPTBot doesn’t block OAI-SearchBot. OpenAI also says robots.txt rules may not apply to ChatGPT-User, which visits pages when a user asks.

Wix’s help shows a blocking example that names GPTBot and ChatGPT-User, among others. It doesn’t name OAI-SearchBot, so it doesn’t opt you out of ChatGPT search. Wix says its sites are open to AI bots. To check yours, open yourstore.com/robots.txt.

6. Measure what AI search does for you

Search Console has a Generative AI performance report. It shows how often your pages appeared in AI Overviews and AI Mode, by page, country and device. It counts impressions only, for now. An impression means a link to your site was shown, not that anyone clicked. The report stays hidden until your site has enough impressions.

Clicks are harder to judge. Google counts AI clicks among Search Console’s web clicks. Wix’s AI Visibility Overview shows visits from AI platforms. One independent study gives a hint. In July 2025, Pew Research Center reported on the Google searches of 900 US adults in March 2025. When an AI summary appeared, people clicked a regular result in 8% of visits. Without one, they clicked in 15%. They clicked a link inside the summary in 1% of visits.

That study covers Google’s AI Overviews only, and it isn’t a forecast for your store. Judge AI search by your own Search Console data and your sales.

7. A short plan

  1. Check that your key pages are indexed in Google.
  2. Leave Search Console’s AI setting on include, the default.
  3. Put your time into your own product text and complete product details.
  4. Install NLWeb only if you accept that you can’t currently disconnect it.
  5. Compare the Generative AI report with your sales each month.
