Wix SEO title and description preview

See the search titles and descriptions your Wix SEO pattern makes for every product, which ones Google may cut, and which come out the same.

Page type

The name you gave your site, from Website Settings in Wix.

The {{ }} are only how this preview writes variables. Wix’s own screen uses variable buttons: choose + Add Variable and pick the same names.

Your titles in search

8 of 12 titles should show in full. 3 are likely cut on desktop. 1 more is longer than Wix’s advice (at most 60 characters) but likely fits on desktop. 2 products would get the same title.

No description pattern. Wix’s pages disagree on what products get by default.

Desktop result, estimated

Sample store (made up)

Drawn result. Title shown as “Autumn Harvest Collection: Spiced Apple, Pumpkin Chai & ...”. No description from this pattern. Search engines may show other text from the page.

Likely cut 989 px wide, 104 characters. Likely hidden: “Maple Bourbon Candles | Juniper & Oak Candle Co.”

Widths are measured in an Arial-like font, about the size of a desktop result. Google publishes no title length: it cuts titles “typically to fit the device width” and may show other text from your page. It may also drop the site name from a title when the result already shows it.

The meta description. By default, Wix doesn’t add any variables to it.

12 products

One per line. To add a price and a description, paste from a spreadsheet: name, price, then description.

Sample: Juniper & Oak Candle Co., a made-up store.

In Wix’s new catalog: Store Products › More Actions › Import › Export Products. In the previous catalog: Store Products › More Actions › Import › Download CSV File › Wix CSV with your products. Wix doesn’t export SEO titles, so this shows what your pattern makes, not titles set on single products.

Read in this browser only, never uploaded. Files up to 25 MB and 10,000 products.

What to change

  • To fix: 2 products would get the same title

Their names are the same. “Vanilla Bean Candle | Juniper & Oak Candle Co.” (rows 2 and 3). Rename one, or add what makes it different, like the size or color.

  • Check: Your site name and the “|” before it take about 249 px of every title

That’s 41% of the 600 px estimate. Without it, 2 of the 3 titles likely cut would fit. Google says it “may omit the site name from the title link, if it’s repetitive” with the site name already shown in the result. So a title marked likely cut can still show in full. Wix suggests keeping your business or site name in titles.

  • Check: 1 product name is too long for any pattern

On its own, it is wider than about 600 px: “Autumn Harvest Collection: Spiced Apple, Pumpkin Chai & Maple Bourbon Candles”. A pattern can’t shorten one name: shorten the product name in Wix, or give that product its own title in Edit SEO Settings.

  • Check: 1 title is longer than Wix’s advice but likely fits on desktop

Wix’s advice for store products is at most 60 characters. Google cuts titles to fit the device width, so a narrower screen can cut it.

  • Note: No description pattern

Wix’s pages disagree on the default: its product SEO article says a product gets its product description, and its defaults table says blank. To set one in Wix, add the Product Description variable with + Add Variable in the Meta description field.

  • OK: The product name comes first

When a title is cut, the end goes missing, so the name stays in view.

How Wix builds titles ↓

How Wix builds titles from patterns

Wix doesn’t make you write a title for every product. It builds each one from a pattern: by default, the product’s name, a “|” sign, then your site name. Those names are variables: placeholders Wix fills in for each product. Wix calls this applying “the same SEO logic to many pages at the same time”. Change the pattern once, and every product that follows it changes, without publishing your site.

Wix’s help writes the default as {{Product Name | Site Name}}. Read it as the product name, then “ | ”, then the site name. This page writes the same pattern as {{Product Name}} | {{Site Name}}.

Wix’s default patterns
Page typeTitleMeta description
Products{{Product Name | Site Name}}Blank, says Wix’s defaults table. Its product SEO article says the product description.
Store categories{{Category Name | Site Name}}Blank, says the defaults table. Its category article says the start of the category description.
Blog posts{{Post Name | Site Name}}Blank
Main pages{{Page Name | Site Name}}Blank

As Wix’s help writes them. Blog archive pages differ: {{Archived Month Name | Archived Year}}, with no site name.

Where to change a pattern in Wix

Go to SEO & GEO in your dashboard, scroll down to Tools and settings and click SEO Settings. Pick the page type, open the Customize defaults tab and click Edit next to Basics & social share. The Title tag and Meta description are there. Wix says you can “edit existing variables, add new ones, or enter static text”: variables are buttons in Wix, added with + Add Variable.

One product with its own title

To give one product a different title, open Store Products (some Wix pages say Products) and click the product. Then choose Edit SEO Settings under Marketing & SEO. Wix says you can “override the pattern and exclude certain pages”. Those titles aren’t in the product export, so this preview can’t see them: it shows what the pattern makes.

How long should a Wix title be?

Wix’s own pages give different numbers. Its help says “less than 60 characters” for page titles and “maximum 60 characters” for store products and categories. Its SEO Setup Checklist says “between 55-70 characters” for the homepage. Google says there’s no limit on a title, but it shortens titles in results “typically to fit the device width”. So this preview shows both: characters against Wix’s 60, and an estimated width against about 600 pixels, our rough guide for a desktop result.

Meta descriptions

Wix suggests “50-160 characters” for a meta description, and at most 156 for store products and categories. A Wix SEO Hub article puts what Google shows at about 160 characters on desktop and about 125 on mobile. Google says there’s no limit and trims the snippet to fit the device width. Search engines can also show something else. Wix says they “may sometimes use other content on your page if they decide that it’s a better match for a search query.”

Why load the product CSV?

Wix says it’s “not possible to export a list of the SEO tags you’ve added to your pages”. Its product export has no title tag or meta description columns. It does have your product names and descriptions, which is what a pattern uses. Wix says the export leaves out digital products, and the previous version exports up to 5,000 products at a time. In the new product catalog: Store Products › More Actions › Import › Export Products. In the previous one: Store Products › More Actions › Import › Download CSV File › Wix CSV with your products.

Repeated descriptions

With the Product Description variable in the description pattern, products that share a description share a meta description too. Wix advises: “Avoid using descriptions from manufacturers to prevent duplicate content issues.” Hidden products are left out of the preview: Wix says a hidden product’s page shows a 404 “page not found” error.

What this tool doesn’t do

It doesn’t read your live site or your Wix account, and it can’t see titles set on single products. It doesn’t change anything in Wix: set your pattern in SEO Settings yourself, with Wix’s + Add Variable buttons. Widths are estimates in an Arial-like font. Google publishes no title width, so a real result can cut a little earlier or later. Values only Wix knows, like product URLs and images, show as placeholders. It doesn’t predict rankings or clicks.

Wix title questions

How long should a Wix SEO title be?

Wix’s own pages differ. Its help says less than 60 characters for page titles, and at most 60 for store products and categories. Its SEO Setup Checklist says 55 to 70 for the homepage. Google publishes no limit and shortens titles to fit the screen. So a title full of wide letters can be cut sooner than one with the same count. This preview checks both the characters and the width.

Does Wix add my site name to every title?

By default, yes, for products, categories, posts and pages. Wix’s default patterns put the site name after the product, category, post or page name, with a “|” between them. Blog archive pages are the exception, and one Wix page says the homepage gets the site name alone. You can change that in SEO Settings: Wix says you can edit existing variables, add new ones, or enter static text. Your site name comes from Website Settings.

What meta description does a Wix product get by default?

Wix’s pages disagree. Its product SEO article says the product description; its table of default settings says the meta description is blank until you enter one. To be sure, set a description pattern, or look at one product page’s source.

Can I export my Wix SEO titles? Does this upload my file?

No. Wix says it’s “not possible to export a list of the SEO tags you’ve added to your pages”. Its product export has no title tag or meta description columns either. This preview rebuilds the titles from your pattern and product names instead, so titles set on single products aren’t included. Your file is read in this browser and never uploaded or saved.
