Four benefits. The numbers behind them.

The makeover makes five edits in four chapters: offer and button copy, fields, design, and timing. Each chapter shows a number with a specific meaning. The field reduction is counted in our sample; the other figures come from outside research. These measure different things and cannot be added into a total conversion lift. Here is what changes, where each number comes from, and what it tells us.

Offer: give shoppers a reason to join

The change: “Join our list” becomes “Your free skincare guide.” The description says that the guide arrives by email and that signing up joins Solara’s list. The button changes next, within the same offer chapter.

The principle: W3C recommends headings that explain their topic or purpose. Naming the guide makes the exchange clear. The quantitative evidence below concerns headline and button copy together; there is no separate percentage for this first edit.

Offer + button: a reported 31.5% signup lift

The change: “Submit” becomes “Send me the guide,” matching the new headline. One offer, expressed in both places.

The evidence: Michael Aagaard reported 31.54% higher signup conversion in a 2013 Bettingexpert A/B test. Both the headline and button emphasized free daily betting tips. The nine-day test included 13,560 visitors and 291 registrations.

The number: 31.54% rounds to 31.5%. This is the reported relative improvement in signup conversion, not 31.5 percentage points. The article does not provide separate registration counts or conversion rates for each version.

What it means: benefit-led copy helped in that experiment. The result belongs to the combined change, so our panel groups both edits under one benefit. It does not isolate the button or measure this pop-up. W3C also recommends labels that identify a control’s purpose.

Fields: two becomes one, or 50% fewer

The change: remove the first-name field and keep the email address needed to deliver the guide.

The calculation: (2 − 1) ÷ 2 × 100 = 50% fewer fields. This is a direct count of the starting and finished sample. If the form already has one field, there is no reduction to claim.

What it means: one fewer answer to enter. It does not mean 50% more signups or 50% less completion time. W3C advises asking only for information the task requires; a form that needs a name should keep it.

Design: 25% less completion time in a form study

The change: use one column, darker text and a distinct button to make the offer easier to read and follow.

The evidence: Seckler et al. (CHI 2014) assigned 65 people to original or improved news-site forms. The improved Sueddeutsche form averaged 85 seconds to complete, compared with 113 seconds for the original. The researchers changed layout, labels, instructions and error handling together, without removing fields.

The calculation: (113 − 85) ÷ 113 × 100 = 24.78%, rounded to 25%. That is 28 seconds less on that form.

What it means: combined form improvements reduced completion time in the study. This measures time, not signup conversion, and does not predict the time saved by our sample. Separately, our review checks text contrast against W3C guidance; contrast alone does not establish accessibility.

Timing: a 26.3% higher observed signup rate

The change: wait eight seconds, retain once per visit, and skip existing subscribers.

The evidence: Omnisend’s February 9, 2026 report covers 1.24 billion popup displays in 2025. Its written breakdown reports 1.9% signups for 0–1 second delays and 2.4% for 6–10 seconds.

The calculation: (2.4 ÷ 1.9 − 1) × 100 = 26.3% higher observed signup rate, or +0.5 percentage points. The chart description conflicts, listing a 2.2% peak; we use the written figures.

What it means: these are different forms’ averages, not a randomized delay test or myuser.ai result. The full dataset is not either group’s size. Eight seconds falls within the reported range; it is not a proven optimum.

Four numbers, four meanings

The offer chapter cites a reported signup-conversion lift. Fields counts the inputs removed. Design cites a reduction in completion time. Timing compares observed signup rates. Their denominators and comparisons differ: neither adding nor multiplying them gives an expected improvement for this pop-up.

To measure this form, randomly show eligible visitors the original or revised version and compare signups per eligible visitor. Keep offers and traffic comparable, and check the effect on shopping. Testing all five edits together measures their combined effect; separate tests are needed to identify an individual edit’s contribution. This demo changes a local example and does not run that experiment.
