WIX SEO

Why isn’t my Wix site showing up on Google?

New Wix sites can take from a few days to a few weeks to appear, on free and paid plans alike. Search for your exact domain first. If nothing shows, check that the site is published, open to everyone and has “Let search engines index your site” turned on. Then connect Search Console, which needs a Premium plan and your own domain, and ask Google to index your home page.

1. Search for your site the right way

In Google, search for site: followed by your domain, with no spaces. Wix’s own example is site:wix.com. Wix says that if any of your pages show, those pages are indexed. Then search for your store’s exact name.

Google says a site: search doesn’t list every page it has indexed, so use it to see whether anything is there, not to count pages. If you connected a domain, search that domain, not your free Wix address. Wix sends the free address to your domain, and says search engines can then no longer find it.

2. Is the site published and open to everyone?

Wix says search engines can only index pages you have published. That goes for changes too: a page you added, or an edit you made, after your last publish won’t appear in results until you publish again.

Pages behind a password, or open only to members, can’t be indexed. Check your home page first. Google says to make sure your home page is indexed: from there it can find your other pages, as long as your menus link to them.

3. Is “Let search engines index your site” on?

  1. In your dashboard, open SEO & GEO.
  2. Scroll to Tools and settings and click SEO Settings.
  3. Make sure “Let search engines index your site” is on.

By default, search engines can index every page of a live Wix site. But Wix lets you turn this switch off while a site isn’t ready to go public, so check it wasn’t left off after you built your store.

When the site switch is off, Wix disables the options for groups of pages and single pages too. Once it’s on, check your home page’s own switch, “Let search engines index this page”, in your editor.

4. Free Wix address or your own domain?

You don’t need a paid plan to be on Google. Wix says all of a site’s content can be crawled and indexed whether the site is upgraded or not. A Premium plan matters for Search Console, in the next section.

A domain changes which address shows up. Once you connect one, your free Wix address (siteprefix.wixsite.com/siteaddress) sends visitors to your domain, and Wix says search engines can no longer find the free address. Wix asks you to allow 24 hours for that redirect to start. If more than one domain is connected, only the primary one appears in search results. Wix sends the others to it with a 301 redirect.

5. Connect Google Search Console

  1. In your dashboard, open SEO & GEO, then the SEO Setup Checklist.
  2. Finish Step 1 and click Connect to Google.
  3. In Search Console, paste your home page address into URL Inspection.
  4. Click Test live URL. If it shows no problem, click Request indexing.
  5. Note the date. Don’t ask again for at least a week.

Search Console is Google’s tool for site owners. It shows whether your pages are indexed and lets you ask Google to index a page. Wix connects it through its SEO Setup Checklist, but only on a Premium plan with a connected domain, and only site owners and admin collaborators can use the checklist. If you verified your site with Google by hand before, it’s already connected.

When you connect through the checklist, Wix submits your sitemap, the list of your site’s pages, to Google for you. It keeps the sitemap up to date, so you don’t need to send it again.

For a new site, Google says the best first step is to ask it to index your home page. That should start Google crawling the rest of your site.

6. How long does it take?

Wix says it can take some time for a page to appear, and that the wait is the same for all websites, not just Wix ones. Google says it can take a week or so to start crawling and indexing a new site, and that crawling can take from a few days to a few weeks.

Asking again won’t make it faster. Google says repeated requests for the same address won’t get it crawled any sooner, and that a request doesn’t mean the page will be indexed. If a week or more passes with no change, ask once more.

7. On Google, but not for what you sell?

If a site: search finds your pages but searches for your products don’t show them, your pages are indexed. Wix says you may then have a ranking issue rather than an indexing issue.

Wix’s list of what helps a ranking: better content on your pages, alt text on your images, sharing your site on social networks and links from reputable sites. For a store, start with what a search result shows: each product’s title and description.

8. Still missing after a few weeks?

Open Search Console’s Page indexing report, under Indexing, then Pages (menu names can change). It lists the pages Google hasn’t indexed, with a reason for each. Google says small sites usually don’t need it, unless searches find nothing from the site, which is your case.

Wix Site Inspection shows Google’s data inside your dashboard: SEO & GEO, then Tools and settings, then Site Inspection. Wix gets it from Search Console’s URL Inspection tool, so it needs a connected domain, a published site and Search Console. Wix says there will likely always be some pages left out, such as duplicates.
